Afterwards, Google Keyword Planner and Ahrefs will help me determine how popular and hard-to-get those keywords are, which will provide me with enough information about related medium-tail and long-tail keywords.
Medium-tail keyword research
Targeting short-tail keywords is impossible if your budget is limited. Why? Because niche keywords that everybody wants to rank for come at a price. However, the good news is that people are searching for short-tail keywords less and less.
Since short-tail keywords are too general, people have started adding more words to them in order to narrow their results. What I will do is make sure to find all those words they use in their search to find your company or even your competitors. To do this, I will rely on the two tools (and many more) mentioned above.
Long-tail keyword research
One thing you should keep in mind is this: more and more people are using search engines to find exactly what they need (e.g. black hat with a blue feather). Knowing just what they need tell us the most important thing about them—they are (almost) ready to make a purchase. In other words, this is your potential client looking just for you!

How long will it take for you to do research?
It depends of the complexity of your niche. It should take no longer than a week, but keep in mind that finding medium and long-tail keywords based on short-tail keywords cannot be done in a day.
